Apple warns that vibrations from motorcycles can damage iPhone cameras
- Vibrations from high-powered vehicles, like motorcycles, could damage the optical-image stabilisation and auto focus systems.
- Apple recommends that you avoid extended periods of exposing your iPhone to vibrations.
It says that long-term and direct exposure to vibrational frequencies can damage the optical image stablisation and autofocus systems that recent iPhone models include. This is because they rely on magnetic sensors and gyroscopes to reduce movement and vibration when capturing a photo or video.
Apple advises that you don’t attach your iPhone to motorcycles with “high power or high-volume engines”. Users should also avoid “prolonged periods” of usage on a motorcycle with your iPhone attached to the handlebar.
If you ride a moped or lower-powered type of motorcycle, it is recommended that you install a mount that reduces the vibrations from the vehicle.
OIS is available on the iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus and later. Closed-loop auto-focus is supported on the iPhone XS and later, including the iPhone SE (2nd-generation).
