Google unveils Pixel 5a ahead of iPhone SE refresh in early 2022
- The Pixel 5a is $50 cheaper than the Pixel 4a 5G and is available in Japan and the U.S
- It contains minor upgrades from last year’s model, with the same chip
It has a slightly larger 1080 60Hz display at 6.3-inches compared to 6.2-inches on the 4a, and a significantly larger battery. The design is the same, with a new color, “Mostly Black”, and the same camera features as the previous model.
It comes as Apple plans to refresh the iPhone SE in the first half of 2022, following Google’s lead with only minor changes. The new model will keep the home button but include support for 5G and have a faster A15 Bionic chip.
It appears as if Google has been affected by shortages with chips, as it is using the same Snapdragon chip in the Pixel 5a as it did with the 4a 5G, which is slower than the A13 Bionic in the current iPhone SE, introduced last year.
