Apple and Google delay launch of Matter smart home standard until 2022
- The new smart home standard was due to roll out later this year but has been delayed until 2022.
- Apple, Google and other tech firms form part of the alliance which is developing the open standard.
The new standard was expected to start rolling out in 2021, but will be delayed until next year. The Alliance suggests that while the technical aspect is complete, it needs to continue work on the application program that allows developers to apply for use of the SDK and certification for their products.
‘Matter’ is a new standard for smart home technology that aims to set out universal compatibility for smart devices and accessories made by a range of manufacturers. It should allow for better communication across apps and devices.
Currently, most manufacturers ship their own applications with smart products, and some devices are limited in the technologies they can support. For example, while support for Apple’s HomeKit is steadily increasing, Alexa and Google Home are significantly more supported in the smart home market.
Dozens of accessory makers have signed up to be a part of the standard, including Apple, Google, Amazon, Huawei, Nanoleaf and many others. While some devices, such as those from Nanoleaf, are beginning to ship with the promise of future support for ‘Matter’, expect to see new devices become available in 2022 with greater integration.
