OLED Takes Center Stage

In 2024, Apple began transitioning its iPad Pro models from LCD to OLED panels. The 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pros now feature OLED displays with ProMotion technology, offering refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz. This shift not only enhances visual performance but also introduces a price increase for these premium models.

To address consumer demand for larger displays without the OLED premium, Apple expanded its iPad Air lineup. The new 12.9-inch iPad Air models match the OLED iPad Pros in size but retain LCD screens, offering a more affordable alternative with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

What’s Next for the iPad Mini?

According to the roadmap, 2026 will mark the debut of a revamped iPad Mini. This new model will sport an 8.4-inch hybrid OLED display with rounded corners, differentiating it from the tandem OLED panels used in the 2024 iPad Pros. The single RGB layer and 60Hz refresh rate promise a sleek and efficient user experience.

MacBook Pro Gets a Makeover

2026 is also set to bring changes to the MacBook Pro line. The screen sizes will see a slight increase to 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch models. More importantly, these MacBooks will transition from LCD to hybrid OLED Tandem displays with Oxide TFT technology. Eschewing the traditional notch, Apple will introduce a punch-hole design for the webcam, maintaining a clean screen aesthetic. Refresh rates will remain dynamic, ranging between 10Hz and 120Hz.

The Foldable Future: 2028 and Beyond

Looking ahead to 2028, Apple plans to unveil its first foldable device—a massive 18.8-inch hybrid OLED screen that could serve as a tablet, notebook PC, or even an external monitor. This foldable tablet/notebook hybrid promises cutting-edge display technology with LTPO TFT and TSP on TFE (Touch Sensor Panel on Thin Film Encapsulation), alongside a polarizer-less design for brighter visuals and improved power efficiency.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), a respected figure in the display industry, commented on the leak: “I presented something similar yesterday at the OLEDs World Summit. One difference is we think the MacBook Air will have an oxide backplane.” While not a direct confirmation, Young’s statement lends credibility to the roadmap’s projections.A concept rendering of a foldable iPad, rumored to be in development inside one of Apple's secretive design labs.Photo via PhoneArena // A concept rendering of a foldable iPad, rumored to be in development inside one of Apple's secretive design labs.

Why OLED Matters

OLED panels are a game-changer for Apple devices. Unlike LCDs, OLEDs emit their own light, making them more power-efficient—especially when displaying dark themes. This efficiency extends battery life, a feature Apple users will undoubtedly appreciate. Additionally, OLEDs offer true blacks, higher contrast ratios, and more vibrant colors. The transition to OLED across Apple’s product lines underscores the company’s commitment to superior display technology.
