  • Two of Apple’s foldable iPhone hinges have passed all the required durability tests performed in the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen.
  • Two allegedly similar foldable patents were published by Apple in 2020.
  • It is likely that only one design will make it to final production.
  • We can expect to see it by late 2022 or 2023.

New reports claim that two of Apple’s foldable iPhone hinges have passed all the required durability tests performed at the Foxconn factory in Shenzhen. The report claimed that the durability test consisted of 100,000 opening and closing cycles. Both of these patents were filed by Apple back in mid-2020. One of the prototypes looks very similar to the Galaxy Z Flip, consisting of a clamshell foldable iPhone design. Analysts say it contains a singular flexible OLED panel which folds when you close the device. It goes on to say that the second prototype looks somewhat similar to the Microsoft Surface Duo, with 2 displays connected by a single large hinge. The hinge will allegedly integrate itself with the display for a truly immersive experience without distraction. Apparently, these early tests contained hinges with very limited internals because the company only wanted to test the durability of their hinge system.

Jon Prosser, who has a solid history of accurately leaking Apple news, also reported on the company developing two foldable iPhone prototypes. Further reports also claim that Apple ordered a huge number of foldable display samples from Samsung (for testing purposes) in early 2020. Even though they have allegedly passed many durability tests already, it will likely be launched no sooner than 2022 or 2023 — keeping in mind that these are only prototypes.
