Apple considered battery — powered HomePod but scrapped idea
- Apple developed a prototype smart speaker powered by a battery.
- There isn't expected to be any major update to the HomePod any time soon.
Apple has in the past explored a HomePod model featuring a battery, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the latest Power On newsletter.
According to Gurman, Apple prototyped a smart speaker with a battery a few years ago, but decided against launching one. The company has released many battery-powered speakers under the Beats brand, such as the Beats Pill+, but no HomePod equivalent.
Currently Apple only sells the HomePod mini after it discontinued the original HomePod in March 2021. It hasn’t launched any new models since the introduction of the HomePod mini, but was rumored to be developing a smart speaker with Apple TV-like capabilities, interactive software experience and a display.
