Apple sets new record of over 1 billion active iPhones worldwide
- More than 1 billion iPhones are now active across the world.
- There are also over 1.65 billion active Apple devices including iPads, Watches and Macs.
- Tim Cook said the growth was largely due to an increase in users from China.
Adding on to his statements, Cook cited Apple’s growth opportunity in China as a source of the company’s success:
"We had two of the top three selling smartphones in urban China," Cook told Reuters, adding that, "upgraders in particular set an all-time record in China."
Further, Cook stated that Apple has gained a huge number of iPhone sales in China from users upgrading from their existing iPhones, as well as from a significant number of Android users:
"If you look at this past quarter, we started selling two of the iPhones four weeks into the quarter, and the other two seven weeks into the quarter," said Cook. "So I would caution that this is in the early going, but in looking at the iPhone 12 family, we saw those switchers and upgraders increase on a year to year basis. [...] And in fact we saw the largest number of upgraders that we've ever seen in a quarter," he continued. "And so we were, you know, very thrilled about that.”
Apple no longer discloses how many iPhones are sold each quarter. However, Tim Cook told CNBC that the results could’ve been even better if not for the Covid-19 pandemic. Cook is referring to the series of global lockdowns that forced Apple to temporarily shutter many Apple Stores around the world.
“Taking the stores out of the equation, particularly for iPhones and wearables, there’s a drag on sales,” Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton.
