2022 iPhones and Macs could feature 3nm chips
- A new preview of a DigiTimes report claims the iPhone 14 lineup will feature 3nm chips.
- Currently, the iPhone 12 lineup features 5nm chips which are the smallest in the market.
TSMC is on track to move its 3nm process technology to volume production in the second half of 2022 for Apple’s devices, either iPhones or Mac computers, according to industry sources.
In a report earlier this year, DigiTimes reported that TSMC will start production of its 3nm chips around the end of 2022. Regardless of this new report, Nikkei previously said that 3nm chips will make their debut on iPads, while the 2022 iPhone lineup will stick with 4nm chipsets. This was also previously reported by DigiTimes and TrendForce.
As for why chips are named 5nm and 3nm, the smaller the chip’s process size, the smaller the distance between transistors on a chip. When a chip gets smaller, it generally becomes more efficient in energy and performance.
