Apple will reportedly partner with BOE for its 2021 iPhone displays

BOE is rumored to be one of the main suppliers of OLED panels for Apple’s 2021 iPhone models.
The company has now completed certification tests and is manufacturing a small number of displays for the ‌iPhone 12‌, according to new reports.
Apple’s 2021 ‌iPhone displays are expected to be more technically difficult to manufacture than previous models due to both LTPO and ProMotion displays in some models, according to rumors.

According to a new report published yesterday from Taiwan-based Economic Daily News, display manufacturer BOE is reportedly going to be one of the main suppliers of OLED panels for Apple’s 2021 iPhone models.

Before iPhone 12 launched, multiple rumors suggested that BOE would supply a percentage of the panels required for the device. However, it quickly became clear that BOE had run into major production problems. In June, BOE failed to deliver its first shipment of OLED panels to Apple, and displays created by BOE failed validation tests. Now, the Chinese company is said to be working with supplier GIS to develop OLED panels for the next iPhone.

An earlier report from The Elec, published in November, suggested that Apple would revisit BOE's manufacturing facility in May or June. If the company passed their validation tests, BOE display panels would allegedly be used for refurbished ‌iPhone 12‌ models and perhaps some 2021 iPhone inventory. According to Monday's report from the Economic Daily News, BOE appears to have overcome many of those issues. The report claims that the company's OLED technology is "closer to that of major South Korea manufacturers’ now."

It is also being said that BOE has now completed certification tests and is manufacturing a small number of displays for the ‌iPhone 12‌, but this is unclear, since these rumors are coming from various different sources.

2021 ‌iPhone displays are expected to be more technically difficult to manufacture than previous models due to both LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) and ProMotion displays in some models. ProMotion on iPhone may allow for variable screen refresh rates between 60Hz and 120HZ. Despite the complexity of the new displays, BOE was said to have won some orders for the new lineup.

Regardless, the ‌2021 iPhone lineup is expected to be a minor upgrade over the ‌iPhone 12‌, with many analysts considering it an ‘S’ version. However, other rumors have stated that this lineup may feature an ‘optical in-display Touch ID’ in addition to Face ID. There have also been rumors of the device having an always-on display.
