iPhone 13 to be released on time next year
- Several reports indicate that next year's lineup is back on track for an on-time release.
- If everything goes as planned, we may see new iPhones in September like in years past.
- It is expected that next year will not be a ‘super-cycle’ year for the iPhone.
- If these reports are true, the iPhone 12 series will be the shortest upgrade cycle in a number of years.
There are a few reasons why next year’s lineup is back to its normal schedule: firstly, manufacturing lines in China are back working at their normal pre-pandemic production rates. Secondly, it is expected that next year will not be a ‘super-cycle’ year for the iPhone. This means we are likely to only see incremental improvements - such as better processors, slightly larger camera sensors, and we may also see the Pro models might finally get ProMotion displays. Apple uses a similar technology in the iPad Pro.
Apple’s iPhone X, which was released on November 3, 2017, was discontinued less than a year later on September 21, 2018. 2020’s lineup cannot be called the shortest lineup ever since the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus - released on September 22, 2017 - were part of the same 2017 iPhone lineup, making it a normal 12 month long cycle.
It seems like we’ll have a normal upgrade cycle next year as long as Apple follows their schedule this time, with a September event and launch date with only 2 weeks between the two dates.
