Apple accidentally reveals name of new app coming to iOS

Apple's upcoming iOS 16.3 release, set to arrive next week, includes a new app called Apple Music Classical. This app was spotted by iSoftware Updates in the iOS 16.3 Release Candidate that was released on Wednesday. The code contains references to "Open in Apple Music Classical" and "Explore this artist in the app designed for classical music." This is not the first time that references to this app have been found, as it was previously spotted in a beta version of the Apple Music app for Android and in the iOS 15.5 beta last year.

The existence of this app follows Apple's acquisition of classical music streaming service Primephonic in August 2021, where the company promised to launch a dedicated classical music app in 2022. However, the app has yet to launch and Apple has remained silent about its plans. Primephonic shut down in September 2021, with subscribers receiving a free six-month Apple Music subscription.

This move to split the Apple Music app, which currently houses all genres of music, may be met with mixed reactions. While some may appreciate the dedicated experience for classical music, others may find it unnecessary as other streaming services simply offer classical music as a genre within their main app.

In its press release for the Primephonic acquisition, Apple promised to deliver "a dedicated experience with the best features of Primephonic, including better browsing and search capabilities by composer and by repertoire, detailed displays of classical music metadata, plus new features and benefits." It is unclear if and when the new app will be released, but all will be revealed in the coming days.
